Description

Be sure to read the Special Notes further down this page for important requirements and restriction.

Located just 45 miles from Puerto Madryn, the Punta Ninfas promontory boasts an outstanding display of wildlife, scenery and picture-perfect sights.

As one of the last untouched landscapes on the planet, it's no wonder that its pristine beaches and crystal blue waters teem with hundreds of species of wildlife. Biologists, naturalists and photographers come from around the world to experience the natural habitat of the penguins, sea lions and elephant seals that make this area their home. You can too during this active full-day adventure that takes just a small group off the beaten track and into the colony of these fascinating and charismatic creatures.

To make your adventure even more pleasurable be sure to wear warm, layered clothing, and hiking boots, and bring along a camera to capture every memorable moment.

The day begins as you board your coach and set out on an easterly route to Punta Ninfas. Sit back and relax as you travel through the quiet and wide-open landscape of scrub brush and sky. Your coaster will take you to the road that leads to the lighthouse that overlooks Golfo Nuevo. Along the way, you may see Patagonian llamas called "guanacos," the small South American ostrich-like creatures known as "rheas," and hares curiously staring as you drive by.

Soon, you'll arrive at El Pedral Ranch, a former 20,000 sheep farm whose shoreline plays host to a colony of Magellanic penguins.

Once inside El Pedral and after a 20 minutes' drive, you'll climb out of your vehicle and walk down the path to the beach. Walk slowly and steadily as you get your camera ready – the penguins are curious yet they're still wild creatures.

Against their drab, rock-strewn environment, the majestic Magellanic is easy to recognize: standing over 26" tall and weighing between four and eleven pounds, it's the largest species of warm-water penguins. They sport a white chin-strap marking, a pink line at their lower jaw and black bill. Depending on the time of year you visit may see the penguins sitting on their eggs under bushes or in burrows.

During your visit some of the penguin's neighbors may appear – the beach at the foot of the cliffs is also home to elephant seals and frequented by sea lions and birds such as Southern giant petrels and rock cormorants.

After you've taken that perfect photo you'll begin your return back to El Pedral where a delicious and hearty Patagonian barbecued lamb lunch awaits. Once seated inside the 115-year-old house decorated with antique furnishings, you'll have incredible views of the Atlantic Ocean while enjoying your "asado" or barbecue.

At the end of your feast, you'll say goodbye to your hosts and return to your coach for the scenic ride back to your ship.

Special Notes:

Elephant seals and sea lion sightings are not guaranteed. Tour included approximately 2 hours of walking over uneven surfaces and not recommended for guests with difficulty walking.
