Patagonia's vast, varied region is home to glaciers, ice-fed rivers and lakes, soaring mountains and sprawling meadows. It can also lay claim as the home of one of the world's largest deer. A hike to the top of Deer Island will not only reward you with stunning views but you may get a glimpse of the shy creature known as the red deer.

With a boat ride and nature walk, this active exploration packs a lot of adventure into an unforgettable three-and-a-half-hour excursion to and from your ship. You'll want to wear comfortable shoes for this energetic walk through the unspoiled landscape and don't forget your camera.

Your exciting day begins with a ride on a motorboat for a cruise across the sparkling water. Sitting in the center of the Aisén Fjord, it's hard to miss the soaring mountains that rise from the island's center. Twenty minutes later, you'll step off onto the dock, meet your friendly and knowledgeable guide and set off on your hike. As you make your way along, you'll learn how Deer Island is the welcoming haven of the elusive red deer, also known as the American elk.

Keep your camera handy - not only are the views across the fjord camera worthy subjects but you may be lucky enough to spot one of the shy little creatures for which the island is named. Recognized by their brown to greyish-brown coat males can weigh as much as 198 pounds while females average 165 pounds.

Your hike continues along trails edged with wildflowers, moss and lichen, and lush ferns and shrubs shaded by towering trees. One of the most abundant trees on the island is the arrayan tree. Recognized by their distinctive cinnamon-colored bark and twisted trunk and branches, arrayans can reach heights of up to 55 feet and can live as long as 400 years old.

Slowly, you'll inch your way to the top of the mountain. Then, get your cameras ready. If a picture says a thousand words, then once you reach the summit you'll have plenty to say. The views and shots from here are extraordinary so take a rest under a shady tree while you get your camera poised for this dazzling panorama of earth, sea and sky.

Photos taken, you'll make your way back down the mountain, cross the island and meet your boat, waiting to return you to shore and the memorable ride back to your ship.
