Description

Be sure to read the Special Notes further down this page for important requirements and restriction.

Snowcapped mountains piercing the sky, undulating hillsides adorned with grazing sheep and a capital city that beckons to be explored. The world beyond Puerto Chacabuco is so endlessly captivating where do you begin? May we suggest a five-hour tour that offers a look at the depth and breadth of the Simpson River Valley - from a walk along the river in spectacular Rio Simpson National Reserve to the bustling city streets of Coyhaique. There's so much to see and do so be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes and bring your camera to capture the day's memorable moments.

After boarding your coach, you'll wend your way along a portion of the Carretera Austral, or "Southern Highway," a 20th century marvel that stretches 600 miles through Patagonia.

The towns here are few and far between but en route to your first destination you'll pass through Aysén, a charming city sandwiched between looming mountains and the Aysén River.

Witness the landscape's solemn beauty travel past your window all the way to Rio Simpson National Reserve. Unfolding over 256 square miles, the reserve attracts photographers, scientists, and nature lovers from around the world. A natural greenhouse, the forests of evergreen, conifer and canelo (distinguished by their light green, waxy leaves) create a perfect home for native animals such as the fox, puma and the world's smallest deer known as the South American pudĂş.

Once you disembark, you'll walk to the Visitor's Center, where a dramatic view of the most scenic combination of river, canyon and valley can be enjoyed.

Next, take a stroll down to the river, acclaimed as one of Chile's favorite fly-fishing spots. From this scenic viewpoint you'll marvel at the dazzling panorama of meandering river, lush vegetation and rolling hills.

Back on the coach, you'll continue your journey to the city of Coyhaique.

Along the way, have your camera handy for two photo stops. A double-tiered waterfall the locals call the "Cascade of the Virgin," was named after claims that the Virgin Mary appeared here; a shrine commemorating the spot stands near the pool. Another photo stop awaits at the Baguales viewpoint just outside of Coyhaique. This prime location boasts spectacular views of the city and the surrounding area.

As the capital of the Aysén region, Coyhaique offers a mélange of modern and traditional architecture, evergreen forests and noted attractions such as the Plaza de Armas, the city's main square. After a tour around downtown enjoy an hour's worth of shopping at a handicraft market for that special memento of your trip.

Your adventure ends with empanaditas and other savory Chilean favorites accompanied by a glass of wine, a soft drink or a Pisco Sour, South America's national drink.

Then, you'll climb back aboard the coach and return to the pier enlightened and charmed by this unforgettable day.
