Description

Be sure to read the Special Notes further down this page for important requirements and restriction.

It may be hard to believe that tens of thousands of years ago the entire area now known as Patagonia's Aysén Region was covered in ice. Through the eons massive glaciers carved out the present landscape, which is pockmarked with lakes, channels, fjords and forests, boasting one jaw-dropping photo opportunity after another. Human settlement has been slow and the region has remained relatively untouched through the centuries.

This world of scenic delights is yours to admire during a two-hour and thirty-minute tour accompanied by a guide who is well trained to share highlights of local history and culture. Watch through your window as you travel along a portion of the 600-mile-long Carretera Austral, or "Southern Highway" en route to the Rio Simpson National Reserve.

Unimaginable stretches of valleys punctuated by cascading waterfalls, rushing rivers, wooded mountains and verdant forests abound at Rio Simpson National Reserve.

Unfolding over 256 square miles, the reserve attracts photographers, scientists, and nature lovers from around the world. A natural greenhouse, the forests of evergreen, conifer and canelo (distinguished by their light green, waxy leaves) create a perfect home for native animals such as the fox, puma and the world's smallest deer known as the South American pudĂş.

Tucked among the rugged beauty and lush scenery of the Rio Simpson National Reserve sits the Visitor's Center. Enjoy a dramatic view of this most scenic combination of river, canyon and valley.

Then, grab your camera and join your guide for a stroll down to the river, acclaimed as one of Chile's favorite fly-fishing spots. From this scenic viewpoint you'll marvel at the dazzling panorama of meandering river, lush vegetation and rolling hills.

Back on the coach, you'll begin your return journey to Chacabuco. With scenic views your constant companion you'll make your way through the small city of Puerto Aysén, which sits at the head of a deep fjord overshadowed by snowcapped mountains. No tour would be complete without a photo stop at a scenic viewpoint so be sure to have your camera when you disembark at the double-tiered waterfall the locals call the "Cascade of the Virgin," named for the visions of the Virgin Mary that many believe have appeared here. Sit back and relax as you begin your return journey to your waiting ship.
