What you will visit:
DAY 1:
Lima City Tour
Discover the 'City of the Kings' on a relaxed drive that includes several stops. Step off at historic Plaza Mayor to view such highlights as the Government Palace, City Hall, Basilica Cathedral of Lima and the Archbishop's Palace. Admire the baroque-style architecture of the San Francisco Monastery. You'll also enjoy the charming residential districts of San Isidro and modern Miraflores, featuring a six-mile stretch of boardwalk with clifftop views of the Pacific Coast.
DAY 2-5
The Galapagos Islands
Thanks to a lack of natural predators, this volcanic archipelago in the Pacific Ocean offers unparalleled wildlife settings and a chance to get up close and personal with gigantic tortoises, incredible marine life and colorful birds. This string of about 19 islands, a World Heritage Site, had a strong impact on Charles Darwin's theory of evolution.
Individual Islands
Each of the islands has its own landscape, vegetation and animal inhabitants. Bartolome's lunar landscape and nearby beach is home to the Galapagos penguins. Seymour Island is famous for its colonies of birds, including the Galapagos blue-footed boobies. Bachas Beach, along the northern coast of Santa Cruz Island, is an isolated paradise. South Plaza Island is blanketed with a carpet of Sesuvium, an endemic plant that spreads over the island. Punta Carrion is a prime snorkel spot, and Santa Fe is known for its beautiful secret coves.
Santa Cruz Highlands
Galapagos land tortoises of all different ages and sizes gather here. Watch these magnificent reptiles in their natural environment and learn how the private ranches help protect these special animals. The lava tunnels are another amazing experience in the highlands. Formed by the lava floods of volcanoes, they range from the highlands down to the sea level.
Charles Darwin Research Station
This is the headquarters of scientific investigation, conservation and the National Park Administration in the islands. Gain insight into the huge efforts being made by scientists, guides, rangers and park managers to preserve this UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Charles Darwin Research Station is also part of the Centro de Crianza Fausto Llerena, which is the breeding center for the famed tortoises.
What you will see along the way:
Lima
The fifth largest city in Latin America, Lima is widely considered to be one of its most beautiful. The ever-changing panorama of city sights takes you back in time to the days of the Spanish conquistadors. The heart of Lima's historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Puerto Ayora
A drive through the rural areas of the island reveals the agriculture of the archipelago as well as the diversity of its flora and fauna. Keep a lookout for the finches that are famous for being the basis of Darwin's theory of evolution.
Meals:
Most meals are covered on this excursion and include local restaurants, hotel dining, boxed lunches appropriate for travel, and freshly prepared meals on board while on island tours.
