What you will visit:
Omaka Marae (cultural meeting place of local Maori)
Set within the picturesque landscapes of Marlborough wine country, the Omaka Marae is the cultural meeting place of local Maori. A traditional welcome ushers visitors into this friendly facility, where you can tour the carved meeting house with its tukutuku panels and a contemporary mural and view an authentic Maori cultural performance of song and dance, including the dramatic haka, the legendary Maori war dance. Enjoy morning or afternoon tea and tales of more than 800 years of unbroken Maori family history and tradition in Marlborough.
What you will see along the way:
Known for its sunshine and Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough is home to over 150 wineries, and emerald vineyards stretch out before you as you drive. While gazing at the staggeringly beautiful landscapes and Marlborough Sounds, you might recognize some as the backdrops used in the Lord of the Rings film trilogy.
Shopping:
On your return to Picton, you'll stop briefly at Vines Village. This Rapaura Rd. landmark features a lakeside setting. Visit the wine cellar, café and six artisan shops, where you can sample and purchase award-winning boutique Marlborough wines, olive oils, handmade fudge and wonderful liqueurs. Merino fashions, gifts, designer homeware, crafts and quilts are available at the Quilters Barn.
