Local Sheep Farm
Take this rare opportunity to visit one of the pioneering sheep farming districts of New Zealand. The main breed of sheep raised in this region is the hardy Merino, whose fine wool fetches the highest prices internationally. A visit to a third-generation family farmstead is an opportunity to explore the grounds, surrounded by snow-capped mountains, watch a sheep shearing demonstration, and enjoy a refreshment.
Ugbrooke Country Estate
This historic Marlborough homestead overlooks unsurpassed views across the neighboring vineyards to the glistening Cook Strait. At this grand country house, one of New Zealand's largest and most historic homes, explore the grounds, learn its British and New Zealand history which dates to 1885, and enjoy lunch in the stately dining room.
Yealands Estate Winery
Committed to eco-friendly practices and sustainable wine production, Yealands Estate Winery is a three-time winner of Best of Wine Tourism in recognition of its passion for innovation and environmental initiatives. As one of New Zealand's most coastal vineyards, its grapes are infused with a particularly robust flavor that can be enjoyed during cellar door wine tastings.
What you will see along the way:
Ruggedly beautiful natural scenery escorts you throughout the day. From Picton, head through central Blenheim to cross the Wither Hills through Taylor Pass. The picturesque drive continues into the sheep farming districts of New Zealand. Then head further into the high country, to the coastal end of the Awatere Valley. Continue through the town of Seddon to the Yealands Estate Winery to admire the dazzling views of the Pacific Ocean. Return to Picton via the town of Blenheim-Marlborough's largest commercial center.
As you head into the high country, stop at a vantage point to photograph the impressive views of Mt. Tapuaenuku, towering at 9,000 feet.
Snack, Lunch and Tasting:
While at the sheep farm, enjoy a refreshment of tea or coffee and a berry muffin. At the Ugbrooke Country Estate, a historic Marlborough homestead that overlooks vineyards and the coast, savor lunch in the grand dining room. Later, visit the Yealands Estate Winery and participate in a wine-tasting session.
Special Notes:Guests must be 18 to participate in wine tasting. Bring cash or credit cards for additional purchases; wine purchased ashore will be will be collected at the gangway for safe keeping and will be returned to you on the last day of your cruise.
