Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Description
In 1681, the Quaker William Penn received the title to Pennsylvania in a land grant from King Charles II of England. Penn and his followers landed in Pennsylvania in 1682 and founded what would later become Philadelphia. Philadelphia is a Greek word meaning "Brotherly Love" and the city is still referred to by this nickname. Today, Philadelphia is the fifth largest city in the United States and the metropolitan area is home to approximately 6 million. While some cities can list historic sites among their attractions, Philadelphia can say it is a historic site. No city reflects America's birth and colonial beginnings better than Philadelphia. The first Continental Congress met at Carpenter's Hall in 1774 and the young nation declared it's independence from England in 1776 at the State House that later became known as Independence Hall. It's also home to the Liberty Bell recognized throughout the world as a symbol of freedom. Philadelphia also served as our nation's capital from 1790 to 1800.
