Showcasing some of the most sacred sites in Japan, your tour begins with a scenic 2.5-hour motorcoach ride through the countryside south of Osaka. Arrive at Mount Koya (Koyasan), the mountain range in Wakayama Prefecture that is the center of Shingon Buddhism. Here, find Okunoin Temple, a very popular pilgrimage spot and the site of Kobo Daishi's mausoleum and Japan's largest cemetery. Explore the stately grounds and worship halls before continuing on to lunch at a nearby restaurant. Next, visit the exquisitely decorated Kongobuji Temple, originally built in 1593, adjacent to the Banryutei Rock Garden, Japan's largest. Finally, see the red pagoda tower of the Danjo Garan Temple standing beside a 1,200-year-old pine tree that is said to have been here during Kobo Daishi's lifetime. There are nearly 20 structures surrounding the striking main pagoda, the symbol of Mount Koya. Relax on a peaceful ride back to port.
