Your full-day adventure through the idyllic countryside of the North Pennines begins with a stop to photograph a well-preserved stretch of Hadrian's Wall, built by the Romans to protect the northern limits of their empire from interlopers. Continue across Muggleswick Common, with views to your right of Bolt's Law, before arriving at Stanhope. Pause at the Durham Dales Center in Stanhope and enjoy a snack of tea, sandwiches and cakes (at your own expense). Continue west across the Pennines to an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty known as 'England's Last Wilderness.' Fill your camera with the expanse of wildflowers, including wild pansies and the rare grass of Parnassus. At the village of Alston, the highest market town in England, the steep cobbled streets provide excellent views of the surrounding countryside. Your journey wends its way past breathtaking vistas and historical sights, including the ancient Roman town of Corbridge, before heading back to Newcastle and your ship.
