What you will visit:

Durham (walking tour)
Pretty Durham seamlessly combines its heritage atmosphere with the lively culture of the youthful student life at Durham University. Best enjoyed on foot, its graceful architecture and important buildings showcase the last 1,000 years of the city's history, from its Anglo-Saxon roots through the Victorian age. It's an approximately 20-minute walk to the highlight, Durham Castle and Durham Cathedral, which together are designated as a World Heritage Site.

Durham Cathedral
Heralded as one of the great buildings of Europe, Durham Cathedral is a stately Norman building built between 1093 and 1133. Set high on a promontory adjacent to the castle, with expansive views of the medieval city below, it has been in use since its original construction. The Romanesque-style structure, also home of the Shrine of St. Cuthbert, has a spectacular interior. The stone vault of the nave is an architectural treasure along with Gothic arches and flying buttresses. A thousand years of British religious history resides within its hallowed walls.

What you will see along the way:
Head into the pretty countryside to the city of Durham and embark on a guided walking tour that reveals the historic city center that is now designated a World Heritage Site.

Photo Opportunity:

Angel of the North
British sculptor Antony Gormley's Angel of the North statue, a rich rust color from the weathering steel, rises 65 feet (20 meters), dominating the skyline. It is made from 200 tons of steel, has an incredible wingspan of 177 feet (54 meters) and can withstand winds of more than 100 mph.
