Description

Naples has a rich history dating back more than 2,800 years. It's a city that can be overwhelming at first sight, but once you adjust your perspective, you'll fall in love with its distinctively southern Italian culture-from the castles, churches and museums to the origins of the pizza pie. A tour of Naples' historic city center is an education in ancient architecture from medieval times to the Renaissance age to the Baroque period.

You'll take in the hustle and bustle of Naples from the comfort of an air-conditioned motorcoach complete with a knowledgeable tour guide narrating the way. This three-hour tour takes you through the historic city center past Naples' marvelous old architecture and public squares, including Via Marina, Piazza Garibaldi and Piazza Carlo III. Also on the tour are Palazzo Municipale, home to the Castle Nuovo and the Naples National Archaeological Museum on Via Foria. This museum of artifacts possesses an important collection of antiquities from the Roman Empire, including many of the antiques unearthed at Pompeii and Herculaneum, as well as relicts from the Greek and Renaissance periods.

Your tour will also take you past the impressive Piazza del Plebiscito, where a stop will be made to see the largest square in Naples where the Royal Place and the Church of San Francesco di Paola flank this semi-circular piazza. Look for the equestrian statues of Ferdinand I of Bourbon and Charles III of Bourbon as you pass by the church. If this church looks familiar it's because it is based on the Pantheon in Rome.

Other significant buildings include the Teatro di San Carlo, which is the largest opera house in Italy and one of the most distinguished in the world. Opposite the opera house is the Umberto Gallery that dates back to 1887.

Passing the Piazza Vittoria, we'll head towards the sea and stop for a photo opportunity at a viewpoint on posh Posillipo hill overlooking the Gulf of Naples. Enjoy the panoramic views where many a postcard shot was taken.

We'll take a break for refreshments at a local chalet for a beverage before heading back to the ship. As we drive along the waterfront, notice the site where Naples was first founded: Castel dell'Ovo or "egg-castle". Its curious name comes from a Roman legend that claimed the castle was built over an egg placed on the site with the belief that if the egg broke Naples would fall.

For tours that offer more in-depth exploration with actual visits to one or more sites, see the other options in this port.
