What you will visit:

Local Markets
Soak up the atmosphere, wonderful scents and local color at two of Montevideo's most popular marketplaces. First, visit Montevideo's former agricultural market (MAM). Built between 1905 and 1915 and recently refurbished, this area was significant in the 19th century as the place where most agricultural and other products were bought and sold. Today, it is perfect for showcasing local handicrafts, spices, delicacies and nibbles. At Port Market, in the old city, the air is heavy with the smoke from authentic Uruguayan parrillas (grills) hidden behind the porticoes, and in the courtyard, you'll find antiques, local treasures and leather goods being sold.

Bar Facal
One of the oldest bars in Montevideo, Bar Facal was founded in 1882 and is famed for its sweeping terrace and the Fountain of the Locks, where sweethearts leave padlocks to symbolize their love. It offers a menu rich in Uruguayan cuisine and is famous for its chivitos (tender beef sandwiches) and homemade dulce de leche (caramel) ice cream. A tango show entertains guests.

Lunch:

At Bar Facal, enjoy a typical Uruguayan lunch and try some local specialties, including the Mate (hot infusion drink), which is made with hot water and yerba mate (ground dry leaves of the ilex paraguarensis plant). The drink is taken communally and sipped with a metal straw (called bombilla). Its drinking is one of Uruguay's most important religious rituals.

Photo Opportunity:
Independence Square
Marvel at the palm-tree-lined Plaza Independencia (Independence Square). The oldest city square in Montevideo, it was designed in 1836 and is the site of a massive equestrian monument and mausoleum of Uruguayan hero Jose Artigas.

Special Notes:

If for any reason access to any of the visited venues is not possible, the alternative would be a visit to the Artigas Mausoleum, where Uruguay's National Hero's ashes can be found.
