Jamaica's plantation era comes to life as you travel back in time to the 1700s. During this turbulent period, the labor of African slaves allowed plantation owners to amass huge fortunes, build aristocratic homes and surround themselves with the best that money could buy.

You'll enjoy a lingering look at Greenwood Great House, one of the most captivating of the island's grand plantation homes. Built in 1740 by the Barretts of Wimpole Street fame, it contains a fine array of distinctive furnishings and the largest collection of rare books and musical instruments on the island. Imagine what it must have been like to live here at the height of the flourishing sugar trade. Many of the homes built on Jamaica during the late 18th century married Georgian elegance with charming features designed specifically for the Caribbean climate.

They typically had a lower story made of brick, cut stone and mortar and a top floor made of wood. Large louver and sash windows and a spacious wrap-around veranda opened the home to the balmy breezes of the tropics. You'll see another fine example of island architecture at one of Jamaica's most talked about plantations. Get out and stretch your legs at nearby Rose Hall Great House where you can snap photos of this magnificent estate. Home to the notorious "White Witch of Rose Hall," a legendary figure in Jamaican folklore, this is the place to learn about Annie Palmer and her infamous deeds. Ponder the mysteries that occurred during her reign as plantation mistress: the practice of voodoo, the mysterious deaths of husbands and lovers, and her own murder by a slave and former paramour.

Say goodbye to Annie and then continue your travels soaking up the beauty of the lush green vegetation and colorful flowers and birds. Take it all in through the windows of your transportation: luxury hotels, tranquil beaches, lively restaurants, the colorful local crafts market, downtown Mo' Bay, the posh Tryall area, and several places that the rich and famous call home.

You'll arrive at a spectacular vantage point where you can look out on your ship in port before disembarking at The Shoppes of Rose Hall for a leisurely 30-minute shopping opportunity. Browse the recommended duty-free shops for the best that Jamaica has to offer: perfume, jewelry, watches, figurines, and, of course, the world-famous rum. Before returning to the cruise terminal, you'll stop at Pier One Marina for a snack of banana bread and a taste of delicious Blue Mountain Coffee.
