Local Connections: Private Estate Haku- & Lei-Making with Hawaiian Cultural Expert

What you will visit:

Lona Ridge Estate
Set on six acres at the foothills of Mauna Kahalawai (House of Water), the private estate of Lona Ridge, at 1,200 feet above sea level, commands breathtaking views over central Maui. This unique home boasts spectacular grounds and gardens that include endangered plants and the very rare koai'a and sandalwood trees. Visitors are escorted by the estate's owner, Ms. Leona Wilson, for an educational tour of the native plants, the history of the sugarcane plantation, and the architectural background of the mansion. You'll also learn gardening secrets and the traditional way to make a haku (Hawaiian braided head lei) or ti leaf leis (cordyline fruticosa leaves woven rope style) with flowers and ferns found on the farm. Your instructor, Iola Bulabar will impart a passion for her culture and the value of this amazing land.

What you will see along the way:
It is a 45-minute drive to Lona Ridge, one of the most spectacular destinations in all of Hawaii.

Snack:
Refreshments are served during your visit at Lona Ridge. Sample menu includes: Hawaiian pineapple, taro chips, juice, soda and bottled water.

Focus your lens on the uninterrupted views from atop Mauna Kahalawai.

Special Notes:

Minimum age is 18 years. Participants must be able to walk approximately 10 minutes on uneven lawn and in slightly windy conditions. Wear comfortable closed-toe walking shoes, long pants and/or bring mosquito repellent. Bring a hat and wear biodegradable sunscreen.
