Description

Be sure to read the Special Notes further down this page for important requirements and restriction.

Leaving the pier, the tour takes you to the Botanical Gardens. Out towards the eastern borders of Funchal, the Botanical Gardens are one of the best examples of Madeiran landscaped gardens. Situated in the grounds of a former private house, the gardens are host to a profusion of plants and flowers, from all parts of the world, which thrive in the island's temperate climate. There is a herbarium, as well as terraces and greenhouses with many rare and indigenous plants, all labeled in Portuguese and Latin. The gardens provide an excellent view over Funchal, so bring your cameras.
After a visit to these gardens the next stop will be at the cable car station for your ride to Monte, which has a duration of approximately nine minutes. Enjoy the scenic and panoramic views over the Valley of João Gomes River before reaching the viewpoint at Barbosas Square in Monte.

The village of Monte (1,677 ft.,550 m), is world known for its many fine properties and gardens. Monte is perched on a hill above Funchal; its twin towered Church (18th century) is a landmark throughout the city. In the centre of the high altar of the Church stands the statue of Our Lady of Monte (circa 15 century), credited with being the source of many miracles. Inside the church you will also find the tomb of Charles I, last Emperor of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, who died in exile n Madeira in 1922. The toboggan ride back into Funchal ends in Livramento. The ride down the hill in the wicker sledges is an exciting one, providing you with a taste of the Madeira of the past decades, when this was the established form of transport, before returning back to port.

Special Notes:

The cable car does not come to a complete stop for boarding: not recommended for guests with physical limitations. Our Lady of Monte Church is subject to closure without notice and visit is time and opening permitting. There may be a wait for the snow-less sleighs during peak times, as it's a popular tourist attraction.

Wear comfortable walking shoes and clothing suited to the day's conditions. Bring a hat and adequate sun protection.

Sequence of tour stops may vary.
Visibility from all scenic outlooks is weather-dependent and therefore cannot be guaranteed.
