WHAT YOU VISIT
La Brea Tar Pits
Acclaimed as the world's only active, urban Ice Age excavation site, the tar pits are home to over one million Ice Age fossils, from a Columbian mammoth tusk to the tooth of a baby mouse. Outside, you can see tar that has seeped up from the ground over tens of thousands of years. Inside, you can encounter some of the Earth's most awe-inspiring mammals and discover how humans shared the frozen tundra with beasts during the "Titans of the Ice Age 3D" film. Learn how animals got trapped in the tar and how it preserved the bones of trapped animals over the centuries. Want to know how easy it was to get stuck in the sludge? Try your hand at the Tar Pull and you can see how difficult it would have been for giant mammoths, mastodons, seven-foot-tall camels, saber-toothed tigers and other Ice Age mammals to get trapped in the tar.
Griffith Observatory
Situated atop Mount Hollywood in the 4,000-acre Griffith Park, the Griffith Observatory is recognized as a national leader in public astronomy, boasting an extensive array of space and science-related displays. The iconic Art Deco architecture is often recognizable from TV and films such as "Rebel Without a Cause," "Transformers" and numerous other sci-fi flicks.
PHOTO OPPORTUNITY
From its perch atop Mt. Hollywood in Griffith Park, the Griffith Observatory is famed for its spectacular views of the Hollywood Sign and camera-worthy shots that stretch from the Pacific Ocean to Downtown L.A.
