What you will visit:

Historic Banana Route Railway Journey
The Atlantic Railroad, described by one engineer as "the most difficult damned piece of railroading in the world," is considered the Panama Canal of Costa Rica. In 1890, the line was finally completed, forever changing the landscape, the economy, and the local way of life. As you travel, you'll enjoy insightful commentary on the indigenous flora and fauna and the history of the banana industry. Although this tour does not visit a banana plantation, explanation of the banana growing and processing is provided during the train ride.

Tortuguero Canals
Board a jungle pontoon boat specially designed to cruise comfortably and quietly through the famed Tortuguero Canals, known as the Caribbean's Amazon due to the surrounding rainforest. The heavy annual rainfall nourishes the area with a wealth of flora and fauna. As you glide along the canals, you'll pass gorgeous orchids and water lilies. A knowledgeable guide will explain the rainforest ecosystem and point out sights of interest which are part of a river system that runs parallel to Costa Rica's Caribbean Coast.

What you will see along the way:
The open-air railway car journey includes stunning scenery and an opportunity to see such wildlife as black monkeys chattering in the forest, two-toed sloths resting in the trees, and colorful birds. From the Tortuguero Canals cruise, explore the wetlands ecosystem and exotic fauna and flora. Conclude the day with a drive through the lush countryside, passing emblematic rural towns and villages that provide a glimpse into the diverse and colorful lives of the locals. (Wildlife sightings are not guaranteed.)

We suggest you wear comfortable clothes and shoes and bring a camera and/or binoculars, insect repellent and raingear. While wildlife sightings are common, they cannot be guaranteed. Tour sequence may vary.
