What you will visit:
Aviarios del Caribe/Sloth Sanctuary of Costa Rica
Costa Rica's three-toed sloth is a slow-moving, medium-sized mammal that is highly adapted to life in the jungles of Central and South America. Meet this intriguing animal at the Aviarios del Caribe/Sloth Sanctuary of Costa Rica, a rescue center established in 1997. Here at the Sloth Sanctuary, the rescue, rehabilitation and release of sloths is emphasized with a focus on conserving the natural inhabitants of the Costa Rican rainforest. Guests learn about the sloths' habitat, the perils they face in the rainforest and steps being taken to protect the future of their species. The knowledgeable and caring staff members tend to the animals until they are ready to be released onto the sanctuary grounds.
What you will see along the way:
To fully experience the sloths' natural habitat, canoe expeditions along the Estrella River and natural trails through the dense rainforest offer up-close experiences with the indigenous flora and fauna.
A bottle of water is offered during the tour.
Shopping:
Visit the on-site gift shop for sloth-inspired souvenirs.
Special Notes:
No touching or holding of sloths at the sanctuary (for their safety and yours), but you will see sloths up close and have many photo opportunities. Wildlife sightings, while common, are not guaranteed. Time segment sequences may change due to extreme weather or other conditions beyond the sanctuary's control. Closed-toe shoes, rain gear, sun hat and bottled water are recommended for your comfort.
