Learn the secrets of the Andean world as you pore over one Incan treasure after another! The adventure begins with a drive through the scintillating capital of Peru to the historic district known as Pueblo Libre. The name, which means Free Town or Free People, was granted by José de San Martín on April 10, 1822 in recognition of the patriotism shown by its inhabitants during the Peruvian War of Independence.

Your destination is the Larco Herrera Museum, founded in 1926 and housed in an elegant vice-royal colonial mansion of the 18th century. Here, you'll enter an ancient world of continual fascination as over 3,000 years of Peru's pre-Columbian history unfold before you.

Pore over the finest collection of gold, silver and semiprecious stone artistry in Peru. Study some of the ancient Incan culture's finest examples of textile work and huaco ceramics and see the tools the masterful artisans used to fashion these timeless treasures.

Along the way, you'll learn much about a culture far different from your own. Each fascinating exhibit is thoughtfully designed to reveal how the Inca poetically defined their religion, their cosmological world and even their own genealogy through the beautiful adornments and artifacts that they created.

Elaborate earplugs, nose ornaments, pectorals, headdress ornaments and masks, many inlaid with lapis lazuli, turquoise, quartz and amethyst reveal extraordinary skill while providing a glimpse into the workings of a culture that celebrated status and power through personal adornment.

The creation of nets, ropes and bags, manufactured with vegetable fibers, was one of the first activities developed in ancient Peru. Later, animal wool, cotton, dyes, and the discovery of the loom (about 1,000 B.C.) led to the creation of a national art form. One especially fine example boasts a world record-beating 398 threads per inch!

For an unforgettable experience, Larco Herrera is one of the few museums in the world where visitors can also choose to enter the storage area with its 45.000 classified archaeological objects. Its masterpieces are considered icons of Pre-Columbian art and the museum and gardens are beautiful in their own right.

Leaving the Museum and all its wonders behind, you'll set off for your next adventure. At the Indian Market, gaze out over hundreds of stalls overflowing with traditional Peruvian handicrafts. Spend your leisure time browsing the shops and searching for the perfect memento of your trip. A Peruvian knitted hat or a stunning piece of gold or silver jewelry perhaps?

On the route back to Callao and the pier, reflect on a day filled with intriguing sights: a stately mansion built over a 7th century pyramid, a king's ransom in gold and silver, and the elegant residential districts of Lima, the capital and largest city in the vibrant country of Peru.
