Visit a part of Chile that truly lives up to its name. In the Enchanted Valley, a monumental open-air museum of gargantuan boulders and murmuring streams, petroglyphs, pictographs and characteristic mortars ground into the rock whisper of days long ago. A guided walk through timeless cactus gardens piques the imagination and creates a colorful picture of what life was like when the Indians of the El Molle Culture inhabited this valley.

With grand geographic barriers, the Atacama Desert to the north, the Andes Mountains to the east, the Patagonian ice fields to the south, and the Pacific Ocean to the west, Chile has long been a uniquely diverse and wondrous land. The fertile Limari Valley, home to a variety of crops including the diverse varietal grapes of the renowned Chilean wine industry, reveals another chapter in the Chile's modern-day fairy tale.

Begin your exploration with a narrated drive along the Pan-American Highway passing by the breathtaking beaches of La Herradura, Las Tacas and Guanaqueros. Leaving the coast, your route climbs the fog-covered hills and enters an everchanging world of verdant ranchlands, farms and vine-covered wineries.

A stop at the noted Tabali Winery for a guided tour provides insight into Chile's wine industry as you study the winemaking process and sample two wines from vintner's favorite Cabernet, Chardonnay or Merlot varietals with your welcoming host. And, of course, there will be time to browse the shop and purchase your favorite vintage for enjoyment back home.

In nearby Enchanted Valley, you'll disembark for an Indiana Jones-style quest from one ancient petroglyph to another. Ponder stone carvings that depict lofty personages with curious antenna and studed tiaras. See pictographs of sun, snake and fishlike forms and peer into hollowed out mortar stones used to grind grains and prepare paints. Discovered in 1946 and declared a National Historic Monument of Chile in 1972, the site holds great historical and cultural importance. It provides you with a thought-provoking glimpse into the daily life of the nomadic hunter-gathers who inhabited the area for nearly 4000 years.
Your taste of Chile continues with a barbeque lunch at a restaurant located at the foot of the Andes. Dine on traditional dishes and sip a Pisco Sour. Containing Pisco, a grape brandy from the 16th century, lemon or lime juice and bitters, the national drink will round out your sensory experience.

And you have lots more scenery to look forward to on your return trip to the pier. Arriving back at your ship in Coquimbo, you'll feel well rewarded by the wealth of experience offers on this strenuous full-day tour. You'll have captured indelible images of ancient petroglyphs, enjoyed fine wines and tasty BBQ, and gained a unique Chilean perspective on the world.
