Description

Be sure to read the Special Notes further down this page for important requirements and restriction.

Mexican handicrafts are renowned the world over for their charm, simplicity and enduring connection to its ancient past. The Mayan, Toltec, Aztec and Olmec peoples, and later the Europeans, all helped shape the handcrafted textiles and ceramics you see in markets and in beachside stalls. And one of the best ways to soak up the art form's history, culture and beauty is during this excursion that takes you into the heart of La Paz where you can shop for wooden handicrafts, decorative pottery, hand-painted tiles and more and meet some of the artisans behind the creations.

You'll begin your sightseeing and shopping excursion as soon as you board your air-conditioned transportation at the pier. Sit back, relax and marvel at the coastal scenery outside your window as you make your way into La Paz. A city of quiet beauty overlooking the spectacular Sea of Cortez, La Paz has seen its share of admirers since it was founded by Cortez in 1535. Throughout the centuries, pirates, missionaries, entrepreneurs and celebrities from John Wayne to Alec Baldwin have fallen under the spell of this picturesque paradise. As you make your way through the "City of Peace," your English-speaking guide will point out areas of interest such as shops, boulevards and the beautiful mile-long waterfront promenade.

Among the city's most notable traits is its dedication to its handicrafts and the artisans who create a variety of unforgettable works of art. The most prevalent of Mexico's crafts is pottery and your first stop is a pottery factory. Here, you can browse for handmade decorative items, glazed tiles and tableware.

Your next stop is a weaver's shop. Mexico's fabric crafting history originates with the Mayans who wove garments, rugs and art decorated with symbols, animals and plants. Today's crafts people utilize many of the same techniques to create placemats, hats, bags, and blankets.

The lovely waterfront boardwalk called "Malecon" will be final stop on your tour. Enjoy a guided walk along the waterfront, admiring the sculptures and historical buildings and viewing the local artisans at work selling their pieces. At the conclusion of a short guided walk you will have free time in town to browse at the arts and craft exposition and enjoy the beach view.

From here, you have the option of returning to port aboard your transportation or lingering behind and sightseeing on your own through downtown and taking the free shuttle a little later. Whatever you decide, when your excursion comes to an end, you'll return to the ship perhaps laden with crafts, wonderful reminders of your time in La Paz.
