What you will visit:

Pololū Valley Lookout
Stare down 490 feet for majestic views of the Pololū Valley from this lush lookout point. The views are tremendous, with towering sea cliffs sloping into the undulating ocean and the black-sand beach at the valley floor glistening in the sunlight below.

Black-Sand Beach
Experience the wonder of treading upon a black-sand beach where King Kamehameha the Great once stood. The ebony grains of sand, formed from lava that cooled and shattered when it flowed into the cool sea, is warmer than golden sand and often attracts nesting sea turtles. The jet-black sand set against the blue water and fringed by coconut palms makes for a stunning photograph.

King Kamehameha Statue
Erected to commemorate one of Hawaii's most beloved heroes, the proud statue of King Kamehameha, honors the man who conquered and unified the Hawaiian Islands and established them as a royal kingdom in 1810. Amazingly, this original statue was
handcrafted in Florence, Italy, in 1878, but was lost at sea during transportation. It was recovered in the Falkland Islands, lovingly returned to its original form and finally sent to its permanent home on the Big Island.

What you will see along the way:
Pololū Valley Lookout is situated at the end of the Big Island's northernmost highway. This visually arresting locale offers vistas of the crashing waves on the black-sand shores with emerald-green foliage and the bright blue sky as a backdrop. A totally pristine area, the Pololū Valley remains unspoiled, just as the first settlers saw it in the 15th century. The trail to the beach is lined with lauhala trees and wilelaiki (Christmas berry) trees, while the sand dunes, 100-feet above sea level, sprout rows of ironwood trees, which help to shelter the valley's interior from the rough surf.

Lunch:
A picnic box lunch is served in a beautiful park location, overlooking the Big Island's dramatic coastal views. Refuel with a fresh turkey wrap, chips, fruit juice and bottled water. Later you'll visit a local coffee shop in the town of Hawi to purchase 100% Hawaiian coffee and specialty ice cream (at your own expense).

Special Notes:

Minimum age is 8 years. The hiking distance covered is 1.4 miles and a 500-foot elevation gain. The tour involves walking on uneven surfaces up and down trails and walking over rocks at times. Wear closed-toed shoes, hat, and sunscreen.
