Description

Be sure to read the Special Notes further down this page for important requirements and restriction.

A sea cycle is a fun and unique way to immerse yourself in Ketchikan's intriguing history, geography and beauty. Designed for two people, the high-performance pontoon-style pedal boat offers hands-free operation so you can take pictures of your picturesque surroundings.

This approximately three-hour tour is limited to just ten people, so you'll have the luxury of having your guide all to yourself. Although you'll be pedaling just under two miles, it's at a leisurely pace. To thoroughly enjoy your adventure be sure to wear warm, comfortable clothes and bring a camera and binoculars.

The excitement begins as you board a van at the pier for the short drive to the sea cycle dock in historic Ward Cove, the site of Alaska's first pulp mill and one of the most productive fish canneries in southeast Alaska. Once you arrive, you'll meet the team and gear up. After a safety briefing and instructions in how to use the sea cycle, you'll step onboard and begin to pedal away. With your guide in the lead you'll head out onto the crystalline ocean waters.

Soak up the serene seascape as you glide near the woods of Tongass National Forest, the world's largest remaining temperate rainforest. Western red cedar, Sitka spruce, and western hemlock line the shore while plants, seaweed and starfish live below in Alaska's accommodating tidal zone. Learn how Alaskans still subsist and harvest from the ocean and forest for food and medicine.

Keep your camera handy. At roughly 17 million acres, Tongass is home to abundant wildlife and you may spot a bear or a Sitka black-tailed deer. And watch the skies - you may see an eagle soaring overhead. For a close up look at a genuine eagle's nest you'll pedal to a nearby tree where parents and their young eagles are often seen nearby.

At the site of the former Ketchikan Pulp Company, learn its intriguing history and the important role it played in southeast Alaska's economy. Breathe in the fresh air and feel the soft breeze on your face as you pedal along the cove with a curious seal or two accompanying your journey. Soon, you'll find your way to a wildlife estuary, home to ducks and their ducklings, jellyfish, crabs, salmon and the occasional bear.

After 20 minutes in the estuary, you'll make your way back into the cove. Learn about the unique pioneering lifestyles the early logging industry allowed for in this area.

Finally, your journey will end back at the dock with hot beverages and a sweet snack. After your snack you'll rejoin the van and return to your ship.
