Take a horseback ride on the beautiful south shore of Kaua'i. It's a unique and relaxing way to explore the beautiful heritage place of Maha'ulepu. Revealing 5 million years of continuous history, this undeveloped watershed is a living museum - a research site and habitat for rare and endangered plants and animals. Maha'ulepu is sacred and legendary to Native Hawaiians, many of whom are connected to this area by ancestral ties and by continuing cultural uses including fishing and gathering. In a rapidly urbanizing region, Maha'ulepu remains an important place for the contemplation of nature.
Your incredible day in paradise begins with a narrated drive from Nawiliwili Harbor, a natural channel at the mouth of the Hule'ia Stream. The harbor and nearby Niumalu Beach Park were pictured in the movie Raiders of the Lost Ark. The origin of the name Nawiliwili is disputed. One claim is that it comes from Wiliwili trees which once grew in the area.
Upon arrival at the stables, an experienced and friendly guide will provide basic riding and safety instructions. Come prepared with comfortable clothing, closed-toed shoes, sunscreen and sunglasses and your camera, of course! The ranch offers well-trained quarter horses with top quality saddles and tack.
During an approximate 1½-hour ride, you'll ride through the ancient Maha'ulepu area popular now to beach goers, windsurfers and local fishermen. You'll experience a variety of scenery and terrain; from pasture ranch land and farm crops to coastal and mountain vistas. You'll cross over a sand bar and stream and travel past beaches and bays.
The magic of Hawaii beckons to you around every bend of the trail. Gaze at sand-dune cliffs, Kiawe trees, limestone formations and rocky inlets that are an occasional safe haven for marine life. Maha'ulepu Beach is remote and rugged, a sacred sanctuary that has drawn popular conservation efforts. With the return drive back to the pier, your half-day adventure is complete.
