Explore Kauai's most significant archeological sites and sacred treasures once inhabited by Kauai's Hawaiian Royalty and Chiefs, view a majestic waterfall, then complete your day with a visit to historic Kilohana Plantation, Kauai's premier destination and experience, and the private mansion and estate of Gaylord Wilcox, Kauai's Sugar Plantation Baron.

View the majesty of Opaekaa Falls, an 80-foot tiered waterfall. The name "Opaekaa" means "rolling shrimp" in the Hawaiian language. The waterfall was named after the shrimp that were once in abundance in its stream and pool, which was the source of water that irrigated the extensive Wailua Taro fields, the Hawaiian staple crop. The Wailua River Complex, designated a National Historic Landmark in 1962, was the exclusive and sacred home, sanctuary and center of government of Kauai's Hawaiian Royalty and Chiefs. It contains the remains of many significant structures including Poli'ahu Heiau, a sacred and royal temple of worship that was in full and regular use when Captain James Cook landed on Kauai in 1778.

Then head to historic Kilohana Plantation, established in 1864 and managed by Gaylord Wilcox, Kauai's Sugar Plantation Baron. Your adventure begins on the Kauai Plantation Railway with train cars reproducing the railway cars of the King Kalakaua period. They are elegant with hand-finished wood interiors and are either enclosed or open-air. Enjoy the 40-minute fun and informative conductor-narrated authentic train tour of 105 acres of Kilohana Plantation. Your guide will share some of the local legends and colorful history of the gorgeous island of Kauai as you ride past fields filled with fruit tree orchards, sugar cane, pineapple, banana, papaya, and taro. When you arrive at the farm, you'll disembark to spend time with the animals. Enjoy them from a distance or take your conductor's lead and hand-feed the friendly pigs, goats & sheep for a unique plantation experience!

After your railway excursion, you can explore Kauai's largest sugar estate mansion for a glimpse of life in the 1930s. The 16,000-square foot Tudor-style mansion was home to one of the island's most prominent families and now serves as a picturesque venue for visitors. The plantation grounds feature Koloa Rum Company, Kauai Plantation Railway, Luau Kalamaku and The Shops at Kilohana. Enjoy the manicured lawns, take in the old plantation village and browse the enticing shops.

There's so much of Kauai to experience on this half-day excursion concluding back at your ship. Nawiliwili Harbor is the island's major commercial shipping center and cruise ship port and Lihue is the seat of the island's government. Your guide will surely point out the region's many highlights.
