WHAT YOU VISIT
Mendenhall Glacier
One of the most beautiful and accessible glaciers in North America, Mendenhall stretches out over a mile and is part of the 1,500-square-mile Juneau Icefield. Upon arrival, there are a number of activities you can do. Explore the trails that start from the parking lot, take in the exhibits at the Visitor Center, view the wildlife that roam about the area, or speak with the U.S. Forest Service Rangers to learn more about this incredible natural wonder.
Juneau Rainforest Garden
Learn Native uses of Alaska's indigenous plants when you embark on a self-guided stroll through the lush rainforest, encountering an array of wildflowers, mushrooms, ferns, swamp cabbage, a moss-covered forest floor and spawning salmon (in season).
Alaska State Museum
Housed in a striking new building in downtown Juneau, the museum combines the collections from the former Alaska State Museum and the Alaska State Library Archives. In a modern glass architectural environment, the museum, referred to as SLAM, displays artifacts, photographs and documents detailing Alaska's rich history. See exhibits highlighting the country's original inhabitants, natural history, occupation by Russia, and eventual purchase and statehood. Peruse the art and artifacts of the Alaska Native collections as well as the state's maritime and gold rush history, displayed in such artifacts as recovered shipwreck pieces, mining pans and whaling harpoons. The huge atrium has a life-sized eagle tree replica complete with a nest.
PHOTO OPPORTUNITY
The many trails around the glacier exposes you to the special beauty of Tongass National Forest and boasts ever-changing glimpses of the glacier. Mid to late summer, wild sockeye salmon are visible in Steep Creek, which flows through the area's trail system.
SNACK
You'll be treated to an "al fresco" snack of muffins or pastries and tea at Juneau Rainforest Garden.
