Bon Appetit Recommended: Fish of the Westfjords
Description
Be sure to read the Special Notes further down this page for important requirements and restriction.
It's hard to imagine a more charming or environmentally friendly fishing village than Sudureyri, perched on the westernmost coast of the Westfjords. This three-hour tour is the perfect introduction to a community that revolves around fishing, allowing you to experience the local delicacies and traditional Icelandic life through your taste buds and your stomach!
The tour begins with a 20-30 minute drive past stunning countryside and through a five-kilometer mountain tunnel that only fairly recently connected the village with the rest of the country. After disembarking, you will stroll the short distance from Sudureyri Church to the first tasting stops.
Your guided tasting tour will bring you right into the heart of this thriving community near the edge of the Arctic Circle and acquaint you with the sustainable environmental stewardship practiced by the local fishermen. They use small fishing boats to travel from the harbor to the rich fishing grounds nearby. Long-lines and hand-lines are used to catch only the type of fish being sought, and most of the catch is processed locally as soon as it lands.
You will sample extremely fresh, top-quality fish from the region and learn how freshly caught fish can travel from Sudureyri to a dinner plate in Europe in just 36 hours!
On your guided tasting tour, you will have some free time to explore this delightful village and its beautiful setting. Take some time to chat with some of the locals. Bring your camera and walk down one of the local hiking trails that lead straight into the surrounding picturesque countryside.
By the end of your tour, you will be feeling right at home! Snap some final photos during the short drive back to your ship.
Special Notes:
Please note depending on your time of visit the Fish processing plant may not be in full operation. If the catch is not abundant enough for the afternoon or week, the fish processing plant is not open.Iceland has very strict seat belt laws.
