The wild and scenic Tasman Peninsula was home to Australia's last penal settlement, the infamous Port Arthur. Visit the Port Arthur Historic Site for a guided tour of the open-air ruins and restored buildings and enjoy a light lunch on this full-day adventure. Travel to Australia's infamous penal settlement, on the UNESCO World Heritage List. As you journey along spectacular coastal scenery, stop at Pirates Bay, which offers a commanding view of the peninsula's stunning east coast. Continue your drive through Eaglehawk Neck, the isthmus that connected the peninsula where the British once posted guard dogs to prevent Port Arthur's convicts from escaping across it. Arrive at Port Arthur and take a 40-minute stroll to witness where more than 12,000 inmates passed through for nearly 40 years. Explore the expansive grounds, and if time permits, board the M.V. Marana for a harbor cruise. Pause for lunch followed by a photo opportunity of one of several striking geologic formations before returning to port.
Special Notes:
The historic walking tour involves approximately 40 minutes of walking. Participants must walk down stairs or a ramp to access the ruins. Once at the ruins, walking is on even, grassy surfaces and uneven, unpaved ground. Some ruins have cobblestones, uneven flooring and steps, and narrow doorways.Please wear comfortable flat-soled shoes, clothing suited to the weather conditions, a hat and jacket, plenty of biodegradable sunscreen and bring bottled water.
There are some inclines on the site to reach some of the buildings.
The drive to Port Arthur is approximately 1.5 hours.
