Experienced hikers will see all of Hilo's natural splendor on this dynamic six-hour adventure that makes the most of Hawaii's varied terrain -- from old lava flows to cascading waterfalls. Lace up your sturdy hiking shoes then board the comfortable van or mini bus and set off on a picturesque ride to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1982.
Along the way, take a moment to stretch your legs and focus your cameras on either Rainbow Falls, an 80-foot cascade surrounded by tropical flora, or the neighboring Boiling Pots, where the river rushes through lava tubes creating a "boiling" Jacuzzi-like effect.
Continue your drive along Volcano Highway, admiring the abundance of lehua blossoms, yellow and white kahili (wild ginger), and guava plants, that line the road. Ascend to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and the Kilauea Caldera, a place sacred to the ancients and home to the goddess Pele. One of the world's most active volcanoes, it has been in a state of constant eruption since 1983 and recent lava outflows have resulted in a completely changed crater.
Your adventure begins with a brief visit to the Kilauea Visitor Center followed by the steam vents. Then, a three-mile hike takes you takes you to the edge of the massive new crater recently formed by new activity. This is a workout but worth the effort as the new crater has tripled in size. You will also hike a portion of Devastation Trail to the overlook of the Kilauea Iki crater. Hawaiian legend tells that it is bad luck to remove a piece of lava, so don't be tempted; there are many a story about people mailing their souvenirs back to Hawaii each year!
Enjoy a snack before the last stop of the day is a well-deserved and tasty one! Visit Hilo's local Big Island Candies, known for their famous chocolate-dipped macadamia nut shortbread cookies. Browse the wide selection of treats at the gift store, and sample some of the delicious products nuts and ice cream at the snack bar before heading back to the ship after this exhilarating day.
