From 800 to 1066 A.D. the people we know today as Vikings raided, conquered, and colonized parts of Europe. Yet they lived simple lives when they returned to their rural settlements. Around 870, King Harald Fairhair, the first king to claim sovereignty over all of Norway, called a village named Avaldsnes on Karmøy Island his main royal estate.

Stretch your legs and your imagination during this half-day excursion that not only offers insight into Norway's Viking history but that of the families who stayed behind to tend the farms and cattle.

Before you board the coach be sure to wear comfortable shoes and don't forget the camera to capture each memorable sight.

From the pier you'll travel across the Karmsund Bridge that links Karmøy to Norway's mainland. Once on the island you'll drive through an otherworldly landscape of verdant forests, heather clad hills and rolling pastureland to Avaldsnes.

Located on the island's northeastern side, Avaldsnes was a place of power where legendary battles between kings determined the fates of each warrior tribe. Acclaimed as Norway's oldest throne, a royal estate existed here until 1450 when powerful feudal lords were eventually weakened and the aristocracy left the island.

Your walk through Viking history begins at your first stop-St. Olav's Church. Construction began about 1250 A.D. by King Haakon Haakonson and completed about 200 years later as a royal chapel. The stone church is steeped in Viking lore. As you walk around the church pay special attention to the north wall. Here you'll find a standing stone called "Virgin Mary's Needle" leaning just inches away from the wall. According to legend, Judgment Day will come when the 22-foot spire finally touches the wall.

Gain insight into the world of Vikings at the Nordvegen History Center. Meet "Harald Fairhair" who will guide you through 3,500 years of Norwegian history. Learn about the kings who controlled the coast, hear kings' sagas and old songs and discover how sorcerers, female warriors and Norse gods played a major role in Viking life.

Another look at Avaldsnes's past greets you at the Viking Farm on Bukkøy Island. Set amid picturesque surroundings, the settlement offers a look at one of the most important members of Viking society-the farmer. Meander around the reconstructed 1st century buildings typical of Viking times and get a sense of life unseen for over 2,000 years.

At the end of this unique adventure, you'll rejoin your coach. Sit back and relax as you watch the sights of Avaldsnes go by as you return to port.

Special Notes:

Guests will need to walk about 400 meters at the History Center, with a few stairs. Also approximately 100 meters walking distance to the Church. The visit to the History Center involves walking and standing for about one hour and ten minutes. The reconstructed farm is situated on Bukkøy Island - ca 15 Minutes walk from St. Olavs church on Avaldsnes.
The interior of the church may be closed at short notice for funerals or other services.
