Your tour begins as you board your motorcoach for a scenic, narrated drive through historic Fort William H. Seward, the first U.S. Army outpost in Alaska and a National Historic Site.
Continue on to a Picture Point, which boasts phenomenal views of Haines, Portage Cove and the Lynn Canal. Set against the backdrop of the 6,000-foot-tall Chilkat Mountain Range, this panoramic shot of your ship and the quaint town will make a jaw-dropping memento of your trip.
Then, you'll travel to the American Bald Eagle Foundation and Raptor Center, an interpretive wildlife display and education center, and learn about these majestic birds and other birds of prey and experience a live presentation with on of the resident ambassador raptors.
You'll venture out along the Chilkat Peninsula where glaciers, peaks, rivers and ocean converge, and witness the mighty Chilkat River emptying into the sea. You'll see the Rainbow Glacier's impressive waterfall tumbling from the lofty heights of the Chilkat Mountains. Along the way, your guide acquaints you with the unique human and natural history of Haines and the Chilkat Valley.
Your next stop, the Haines Packing Company at Letnikof Cove, unveils the state-of-the-art equipment of this working fish processing facility. Built in 1917, the facility features a smokery with new pinbone extractors, blast freezers and vacuum packing machines. A guided tour provides details and demonstrations of how the facility functions during the fishing season.
Before your return trip to the pier, you'll snack on delicious locally caught and smoked salmon, sourdough bread and homemade cookies at a private, covered beachside location.
