Description

Be sure to read the Special Notes further down this page for important requirements and restriction.

The jaw-dropping sights of Alaska are as large and impressive as the state itself. And the legacy and traditions of Native Tlingits are just as captivating and welcoming. This half-day excursion allows you to experience the best of both worlds beginning with a float trip through the breathtaking Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve.

Ideal for the entire family, it's advised that you dress in warm layers and bring an extra pair of socks. For your convenience a rain poncho, rubber boots, and life jacket will be provided. And don't forget the camera - you'll certainly want to capture each mesmerizing and memorable moment of your day.

After boarding your coach, sit back and relax as your scenic drive takes you past Fort William H. Seward, one of the first U.S. Army outposts in Alaska and a National Historic Site. Then, as your journey continues on Haines Highway watch for moose and swans in the marshlands as you head up the Chilkat River Valley.

Soon, you'll arrive at the magnificent Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve. Not only is the preserve home to 200 to 400 eagles, but it also shelters about 80 eagle nests, and it is here that many eagle residents raise their young.

Once you disembark you'll be provided with rubber boots and a life jacket. Your friendly and knowledgeable guide will lead a safety briefing into the proper use of your raft. Then, you'll step inside your sturdy, 18-foot inflatable rubber raft and push off into the peaceful waters of the Chilkat River.

From this unique vantage point you have unparalleled views of some of the most majestic scenery in Alaska. You'll float through the heart of the Bald Eagle Preserve. Along the way, naturalist guides will share their knowledge of this incredible land, its history and the abundant wildlife that lives here. Keep your camera handy - you'll be able to catch stunning nature photos not only of eagles, but frequent visitors to the area also include moose, bears and even wolves.

Your raft will gently deliver you to the shores of the river for a picnic lunch, complete with beverages and cookies. Refreshed, you'll be welcomed into the Native village of Klukwan, nestled on the riverbank.

Your tour of the village includes a visit to the Jilkaat Kwaan Heritage Center, a state-of- the-art, museum-quality center that houses an array of cultural treasures of the Chilkat Tlingits. Here you can witness the rarely seen masterworks of Northwest Coast Indian art in the "Whale House Collection." It's believed that KaajĂsdu.axtch, a Tlingit master artist, created this much-coveted collection of carvings, never displayed for public viewing, over 200 years ago.

After your tour you'll stroll to the village's traditional cultural camp and watch craft and storytelling demonstrations followed by a visit to the gift shop for a chance to purchase handmade souvenirs.

Finally, you'll return to your coach, your heart and camera filled with wild and wonderful memories of breathtaking beauty.
