Your tour begins as you board your expedition bus to follow the route of returning salmon along the scenic Chilkoot River. Nestled between rugged glaciers and snowcapped mountains, the fertile Chilkoot Valley is home to generations of brown bears, bald eagles, mountain goats, river otters and salmon.

Inquisitive visitors, bird watchers and photographers are amazed by the migratory and resident birds. A stop at Deer Rock allows for a stunning photo opportunity and a fascinating depiction of Tlingit Indian legends and history by your guide.

The next stop is a fish weir, where technicians count migrating salmon as they return. You'll make your way to Chilkoot Lake, where you'll set up powerful spotting scopes for close-up views of mountain goats in alpine meadows, bears along the river and nesting eagles. You can actually take photos through the scopes. An invigorating nature walk beneath the canopy of magnificent trees and through an ancient muskeg invites you to experience the living tapestry within the temperate rainforest.

Your tour concludes with a narrated drive through Haines and historic Fort Seward before returning to your ship. Should you choose, you can stay in town and shop. Guides will orient you to downtown shops, the shuttle bus depot, and the cruise ship dock, all within a six block radius. Passengers remaining in town are responsible to return to the ship on their own.
