Description

Be sure to read the Special Notes further down this page for important requirements and restriction.

On this breathtaking half-day guided tour, explore some of the most beautiful sections of Iceland's Snæfellsnes Peninsula, which is full of magnificent cliffs, phenomenal volcanic rock formations and an amazing glacier-topped stratovolcano. Start with a picturesque ride along the peninsula's mesmerizing shores to reach the southwestern tip, home to Djupalonssandur, where a serene black-pebbled beach basks in the sun. Once a thriving fishing village, this magnificent stretch of land is now uninhabited. The unique shoreline features four legendary lifting stones, each heavier than the last, used to measure the strength of fishermen before hiring them for work. After testing your mettle on these natural "free weights,' grab a handful of the black pebbles from the shore to appreciate their silky-softness. Worn smooth over time from the rushing tide, these supple, rounded stones produce a soothing tinkling sound every time the sea rushes through them.

(*Please note: Since the walking path leading from the parking lot down to the lifting stones is steep and can be quite slippery in wet weather, we leave it as optional for those who wish to continue to there with the guide. All guests walk along a wooden platform path that leads to a viewpoint offering beautiful vistas of the ocean and the black pebbled beach below. From there visitors can see the remains of a trawler that was wrecked by stormy weather while out at sea.)

The excursion continues in the ancient fishing village of Hellnar, which was once the leading port of call for all fishing and fishing vessels in the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. Dating back to 1560, this now quiet setting, which once also housed agricultural farms, features stunning volcanic rock formations on the beach. Snap photos of Valasnös, a protruding cliff that juts out over the sea then dives into the rushing water. Explore the visitor center for Snæfellsnes National Park, which accounts for a good portion of the peninsula.

Moving on, travel to the enchanting fishing hamlet of Arnarstapi, which plays a starring role is several renowned Icelandic legends. Enjoy time to stroll along the area's splendid cliffs, where endless seabirds gather to nest. Keep an eye out for kittiwakes, fulmars, razorbills and a vast arctic tern colony. Marvel at the spectacular volcanic rock formations including timeworn volcanic plugs and three blowholes. When the wind is strong, fountains of seawater stream through their openings.

After a short drive to the peninsula's rugged southwestern shore enjoy a scenic ride back to ship.
