What You Will Visit:

St. Michael's Cave:
A series of underground, limestone caves and tunnels are located in the Upper Rock Nature Reserve of Gibraltar, approximately 300 meters (984 feet) above sea level. This natural phenomenon showcases stalagmites and stalactites, a series of twisting subterranean passageways and an unexpected amphitheater used as a concert hall. Cathedral Cave was given its name because the formations hanging from the walls resemble organ pipes. Steeped in mythological legend, the cave has also been interpreted as the Gates of Hades and the passageway to the underworld.

Great Siege Tunnels:
After years of abandonment, the World War II Great Siege Tunnels of Gibraltar were opened to the public. In 1940, Britain was at war with Italy and Germany, and the fate of Gibraltar was uncertain. British military leaders and Winston Churchill believed that Gibraltar was in great danger of an attack. To save the Rock, a massive underground fortress was built, consisting of a network of tunnels, 30 interconnecting miles, that lead to a hospital, power station, military headquarters and room to support 10,000 troops and civilians.

Apes Den:
The tailless monkeys also known as Barbary apes are the only free-roaming monkeys in Europe. Mysteriously inhabiting the area for centuries, they are believed to have made their way onto The Rock through underground caves or were perhaps imported by sailors and pirates who brought them over from Africa on voyages. The apes are well cared for by the Gibraltar Ornithological and Natural History Society and are given fresh food and water every day to supplement what can be found in the wild.
What you See Along the Way:
A motorcoach drive around the Rock reveals the catchment area and Catalan Bay en route to the Upper Rock Nature Reserve. On return, pass the Moorish castle and lively main street.

Photo Opportunities:
Upper Rock Nature Reserve:
From the Top of the Rock, take in picture-perfect views. Europe stretches out below, Africa is on the horizon, and the waters where the Atlantic and Mediterranean meet shimmer in the sunlight.

Shopping:
Main Street is Gibraltar's principal market district, offering duty-free shopping, a wide array of souvenirs and curio shops, as well as fashionable boutiques.

Special Notes:

The cave has over 75 steps to exit. Wear comfortable walking shoes.
