Are you someone who is already familiar with Gdansk? Or perhaps an adventurer who prefers the excitement of going your own way? Then embark on this full-day excursion that allows you to explore the fabled city completely on your own! Just put on your walking shoes and board your air-conditioned motorcoach at your pier for a scenic 75-minute drive to the city.

As you arrive in Gdansk, you'll be struck by the timeless beauty of this elegant city that dates back to 997 AD! Over the centuries it has been famous for being a rich port, a bustling cultural center, the site of the beginning of WWII and the birthplace of the Solidarity movement - the trade-labor movement that played a pivotal role in bringing down the Iron Curtain. Disembark at a centrally-located point and, equipped with city maps provided for your convenience, choose exactly which facets of this fascinating city's offerings you will sample! Walk through Main Town where you can view the stunning Green Gate, located in the city's old fortified medieval walls.

Stroll along Long Street, a 13th-century merchant road. Revel in Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architecture en route to the majestic Town Hall with its carillon of 37 bells. View Artus Court, a 15th-century merchant's palace and the massive Neptune's Fountain, one of Gdañsk's most recognizable symbols. Visit St. Mary's Basilica, the world's largest brick church featuring room for 25,000 worshippers! As long as you're wearing your walking shoes, why not venture up its 400 tower steps to take in panoramic views of the city? Take the roads less travelled to find the city's hidden gems! Explore the nooks and crannies of buildings, side streets, or one of the city's numerous museums. Remember that some venues require an entry fee, so plan accordingly.

Are you a people person? Strike up conversations with locals, some of whom may have stories to share about the Solidarity Movement. Follow it up with a visit to Solidarity Square to view the monument to the striking workers slain by the regime in 1970. Or visit the Roads To Freedom Exhibition depicting Poland's turbulent path to democracy. Visit the meeting hall where Solidarity began for a truly moving experience.

Take time out from your exploration to indulge in a traditional Polish-style meal at any of a number of fine retaurants. Or sip a coffee and people watch. The sidewalk cafés near St. Mary's Basilica are ideal for this. Of course, shopping is always an option. Or, for some, it's a must! Gdansk's most elegant shopping street is Mariacka Street. As you peruse its shops, check out the amber jewelry that is ubiquitous in the city. After all, Gdansk is one of Europe's amber centers.

No matter what you choose to do and see, as you board your motorcoach for your scenic and relaxing drive back to your ship, you'll bring with you the fascinating and fulfilling experience of your day spent exploring one of the Baltic's most beautiful cities on your own.
