Description

Not only is Poland's Baltic region home to some of the most beautiful and historically significent cities in Europe, it is also one of the continent's amber centers. You'll have the opportunity to explore both during this full-day excursion that takes you to experience the spectacular highlights of the fabled city of Gdansk and the inner workings of an amber jewelry factory!

Aboard an air-conditioned motorcoach, you'll set out from your pier in Gdynia for a 75-minute scenic drive to Gdansk. Dating back over 1000 years, this breathtaking city has enjoyed fame as a rich port, a bustling cultural center, the site of the beginning of WWII and the birthplace of the Solidarity movement - the trade-labor movement that played a pivotal role in bringing down the Iron Curtain. Immerse yourself in the city's historical offerings with an 80-minute, guided walking tour of Main Town - the oldest area in the city. As your knowledgeable guide narrates you'll visit the stunning Green Gate, the oldest gate in Gdansk located in the city's old fortified medieval walls.

Stroll along Long Street, a 13th-century merchant road leading to the oval market place that was the site of executions of witches, heretics and criminals. Revel in Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architecture as you walk toward majestic Town Hall with its carillon of 37 bells. Visit Artus Court, a 15th-century merchant's palace. Pause to marvel at the massive Neptune's Fountain, one of Gdañsk's most recognizable symbols. Discover the pride of Gdansk: St. Mary's Basilica, the world's largest brick church featuring room for 25,000 worshippers! View its multiple chapels, elaborate altarpiece, ancient tombstones, and 15th-century astronomical clock. Following the guided portion of your tour, you're on your own for 30 minutes to shop for crafts, art, and other souvenirs of your visit.

You'll want to check out Mariacka Street, Gdansk's most elegant shopping street. Then reboard your motorcoach for your scenic drive back to Gdynia where you'll visit the S&A Amber Jewelry Factory, one of the area's premiere manufacturers of amber jewelry. The crafting of amber has been big business in Poland since medieval times and the area has a reputation for its superb artisans who specialize in working with this 'Gold from the Baltic'. And no wonder since the Baltic region is home to the largest known deposit of amber (dating back 44 million years!) with 80% of the world's known amber found here.

You will listen to the fascinating history of this fossilized resin (washed down ancient rivers from prehistoric forests) that has been venerated for its versatility and beauty since time immemorial. Tour the factory to see the amber polishing and jewelry making departments and learn the difference between genuine amber and imitation.

As a special bonus you'll have the opportunity to purchase this exquisite amber at factory prices prior to your brief ride back to your ship. A perfect memento of a day exploring the beauty and history of the Baltic.
