WHAT YOU VISIT
Livorno Foodie Tour
This Renaissance-era port city may be known as the gateway to Pisa and Tuscany, but it's also renowned for its cuisine. You'll depart the port for a short bus ride into the heart of Livorno and stop near the Old Fortress and begin a guided walking tour. Your first stop will be the Old Medici port. Stroll past the fishermen's marble stalls to the local Fish Market, see the daily Fish Auction in action and learn how fish is selected for use in local recipes. From here, you'll board a typical fishing boat, where local Chef Paolo will prepare "cacciucco," the famous Livorno fish soup, served with a delicious "panino cacciuccoso" (fish sandwich), accompanied by a glass of wine. Back on the wharf, you'll walk along the Via Grande, the main shopping street, to the Outdoor Market. Learn its 500-year-old history as you walk past the colorful fruit and vegetables stalls. Continuing your gastronomic tour, you'll stop at Il Frataio Restaurant for a "bombolone," a sweet treat filled with chocolate or custard cream. Your gastronomic adventure ends at a typical cantina on the canals next to the beautiful 18th century church of Santa Caternia for wine and typical appetizers.

PHOTO OPPORTUNITY
From the typical fishing boats bobbing up and down in the water and the dozens of stalls piled high with fresh and smoked fish, cheese, ham and fresh to the Neoclassic architecture of the Outdoor Market building and the octagonal design of Santa Caternia, your camera will be working overtime!

SNACKS
One of the best ways to learn about the culture of a city is through its food and some of the other local favorites you'll sample include a savory chickpea cake called a "panino cinque e cinque; " bruschetta with tomatoes, anchovies, and cold cuts; and Spuma, a thirst-quenching soft drink.

WHAT YOU SEE ALONG THE WAY
Among the sites you'll encounter during your culinary tour is the Monument of the Four Moors. The most famous monument of Livorno, the 17th century sculpture featuring four bronze statues of enslaved prisoners chained at the base is the most famous monument in Livorno.
