What you will visit:
Torshavn
Settled by Vikings around 900 A.D., Torshavn is the capital city of the Faroe Isles. One of the smallest capital cities in the world, it is the government, banking and educational center of the land. This pretty town of 20,000 rises gently up the hillside from the water's edge, dotted with red painted government buildings and charming turf-roofed cottages. Restaurants and cafes can be found nestled alongside the national theater, the national library and several delightful museums.
Northern Eysturoy
Eysturoy is the second largest of the Faroe Islands. Separated from Streymoy by a narrow sound, this rocky island is home to over 60 mountain peaks and has been declared an Important Bird Area. The rugged terrain is a perfect nesting ground for a variety of seabirds and is home to rare species like the European storm petrel.
What you will see along the way:
Your journey from Torshavn to northern Eysturoy takes you past idyllic villages and the old whaling station at Áir. You'll cross the only bridge over the Atlantic, which spans the channel of Sundini to connect Eysturoy with the larger island of Streymoy. You'll then cross the mountains to Gjogv, taking in views of the Giant and the Hag--two legendary sea stacks. You'll pass the highest mountain in the Faroe Islands, Slættaratindur at 2,983 feet, and Gjogv Gorge. A panoramic drive brings you back to Tórshavn via the mountain road.
Photo Opportunities:
There are several viewpoints along your route, and your tour stops to capture a host of picture-perfect moments.
Stop at the Eioi and Funning viewpoints and snap a photo of 'the only bridge over the Atlantic,' which spans the narrow channel of Sundini to connect Eysturoy with the larger island of Streymoy.
Upon arrival in Gjogv Village, point your lens at the approximately 617-foot-long (about 188-meter-long) gorge that serves as a natural harbor for fishing boats.
At the Torshavn Viewpoint, the charming village spreads out below the hillside, offering views of the narrow winding streets, colorful turf-topped houses and the sparkling harbor below.
