What you will visit:

Bluff Cove Penguin Rookery
A rugged 4x4 vehicle brings you to Bluff Cove Penguin Rookery, a privately owned wildlife haven on East Falkland Island, an incredible habitat for several species of penguins, including over 1,000 pairs of gentoo penguins with flamboyant orange beaks and peach colored feet that nest annually by the beach. Also look for the Magellanics, named after the maritime explorer Ferdinand Magellan. This beautiful wilderness is also home to gulls, turkey vultures, and sheathbills (which are always looking for ways to steal a penguin egg from an unsuspecting penguin). Bluff Cove Lagoon is sometimes patrolled by sea lions from a nearby island, and dolphins occasionally frolic in the surf.

Local Connections:
Local experts Kevin and Hattie Kilmartin escort you during your adventure. Kevin came to the islands in 1976 after backpacking across South America. He bought Bluff Cove Farm in 1980. Hattie runs the café and gift shop. She grew up in the English Lake District and started cooking professionally in Switzerland. Hattie bakes all the cakes and cookies for the Sea Cabbage Café and designs many of the lovely and unique handicrafts sold in the gift shop.
Bluff Cove Museum
Inside, peruse displays depicting life in the Falklands, the history of Bluff Cove, and the Falklands War.

What you will see along the way:
Bluff Cove is located on the rugged and exposed coast of East Falkland. Journey from Stanley over paved and gravel roads to the Bluff Cove Penguin Rookery. Along the way, you'll see miles of nothing but sprawling farmland, rolling, verdant hills and meandering streams. Arrive at the 35,000-acre sheep and cattle ranch known as Bluff Cove Farm, then board a 4x4 vehicle and head to the shoreside Penguin Rookery.

Photo Opportunities:
Nature photographers say the best animal shots take patience. Get your camera settings ready and then go explore or let the animals come to you! In addition to the penguins, seek out a host of other birdlife and possibly sea lions and dolphins.

Snack:
Local host Hattie bakes all the cakes and cookies served at the Sea Cabbage Café. Treat yourself to one of her sweet nibbles made with fresh, local flavors alongside coffee, tea or hot chocolate.

Shopping:
In addition to running the café, Hattie is the curator of the gift shop. She is skilled in working with Falkland wool-spinning, felting, weaving and knitting-and designs the unique Bluff Cove tweed. She also sources the exclusive gifts in the shop directly from regional artists and makers.

Special Notes:

Due to the bumpy nature of the cross-country ride, this tour is not recommended for pregnant women or passengers with back, neck or mobility conditions. Dress in warm layers, wear sensible outdoor shoes and bring a waterproof jacket and hat.

Tour capacity is extremely limited; book early to avoid disappointment.
