Description

Be sure to read the Special Notes further down this page for important requirements and restriction.

As one of the last untouched landscapes on the planet, it's no wonder that the pristine beaches and crystal blue waters of the Falkland Islands teem with hundreds of species of wildlife. Wildlife biologists, naturalists and photographers come from around the world to experience the natural habitat of the gentoo penguin. You can too during this active, two-hour 4x4 adventure that takes just a small group off the beaten track and into the colony of these fascinating and charismatic creatures.

To make your adventure even more pleasurable be sure to wear warm, layered clothing, gloves, a hat and a scarf. Lace up your hiking boots and bring along a camera to capture every memorable moment (flash photography is not allowed).

From the Jetty Visitors Center, it's just a 15-minute drive to Newans Station where you'll meet your friendly and knowledgeable 4x4 driver/guide. Then, you'll hop aboard your 4WD vehicle and go off road across this breathtaking landscape. As you make your way along to your destination, you'll notice an abundance of rocks. These aren't ordinary rocks but stone runs, natural formations that are the result of erosion caused by freeze-thawing during the last ice age.

About 15 minutes later, you'll arrive at Newans Farm, tucked on a cliff's rugged edge overlooking the sparkling sea. This penguin paradise is home to about 200 breeding pairs of gentoo penguins. They don't migrate, preferring to stay in the Falklands throughout the year.

After climbing out of the vehicle, feel free to view the curious gentoos. Against their drab, rock-strewn environment, gentoos are easily recognized by their flamboyant red-orange beaks, white-feather caps, and peach-colored feet. (Although the penguins are familiar with human interaction, it's always wise to be cautious.)

On land these waddling creatures stand 20-to 36-inches tall and reach a maximum weight of 19 pounds, which makes the gentoo the third largest-sized penguin. But they're very graceful underwater. Their streamlined bodies and strong, paddle-shaped flippers can propel them up to 22 miles an hour, faster than any other diving bird.

During your visit some of the gentoo's neighbors may appear - the rookery is usually frequented with birds such as Southern giant petrels, skuas, rock cormorants, upland geese, turkey vultures, kelp gulls and flightless steamer ducks.

After the last photograph is taken, you'll climb back aboard the 4x4 for the return trip to the Jetty Visitor Center ready for your next adventure. Share your pictures and stories with fellow passengers as you rumble along.

Special Notes:

Tour is not recommended for passengers with back, neck or similar problems due the bumpy, off-road drive. Dress warmly and bring comfortable walking shoes. This excursion operates through mid-February.
