Description

Designed for the history and military buff, this excursion offers a first-hand look at the many battlefields left behind by the Falklands War. Invaded and occupied by Argentina in April 1982, Britain launched a naval task force to retake the Islands. The war lasted just 74 days but over 900 military and civilian lives were lost. A local battlefield expert will lead you on a tour of one of the major battle sites.

You'll board your transportation at the pier and travel outside of Stanley to Estancia Farm. As you travel along, it may be hard to imagine that some of the fiercest fighting took place around the low-lying, green hills that surround you. There is no ground cover - no trees to hide behind or mountainous caves to escape to. Scattered throughout the Islands are many reminders of the war - man-made bunkers, foxholes, discarded clothing and used munitions share the windswept coasts and mountains. (Minefields still cover much of the open countryside and are clearly marked). Estancia Farm became a base for hundreds of British troops from the beginning of June 1982. The coach will stop here and passengers can leave the bus to enjoy the views west while your guide explains about the famous "yomp" from San Carlos and the battle for Goose Green.

Depart heading east towards Stanley while your guide explains how British forces positioned themselves around the surrounding mountains. You'll make two more stops; the first at the site of the wreckage of the Chinook and Puma and the second at a location to enjoy the view of Stanley and the surrounding five battle site mountains, where your guide provides details about the final battles that took place in the run up to the Liberation of Stanley on 14th June 1982.

At the end of this moving and memorable tour, you'll board your transportation for the return trip to the harbor.
