What you will visit:
Bertha's Beach
Bertha's Beach off the east coast of East Falkland is identified as an Important Bird Area (IBA) due to its significant variety of wildlife and is also recognized as a RAMSAR site for its wetlands of international importance and 80 different species of flowering plants, including Falkland lavender and the national flower, Pale Maiden. Only recently opened to cruise passengers, this remote, white-sand beach was named for a shipwreck on its shores in 1953 that lost its cargo of cedar wood, which can still be found washed up on its shores. Bertha's Beach is famous for its colony of gentoo penguins (800 strong) that waddle the shoreline year-round and for the dolphins that frolic quite close to the beach. Other significant wildlife that make their home in the wetland ponds behind the sand dunes include the black-necked swan, migratory white-rumped sandpipers, Patagonian crested ducks, Chiloe wigeons and other species endemic to the Falkland Islands.
What you will see along the way:
Your journey to Bertha's Beach begins when you travel along the islands' main network of roads, winding through the dramatic Falklands landscape and gazing upon the geological stone runs, catalogued by Charles Darwin himself. After approximately one hour, your vehicle will go off road through the flatlands to the exceptional expanse of Bertha's Beach. To make your adventure even more pleasurable, be sure to wear warm, layered clothing, gloves, a hat and a scarf. Lace up your hiking boots and bring along a camera to capture every memorable moment.
