What you will visit:

Ahu Akivi
Unlike the other 900 moai on Easter Island, the seven stone giants situated here are not located on the coast but nine miles inland. Although they look out towards the ocean, they were originally erected to stand guard over a large village, which today lies in ruins. According to ancient legend, these 14-foot-tall moai represent the seven young explorers King Hotu Matu'a sent out into the watery wilderness to find new land for the island's people.

What you will see along the way:
Your 30-minute drive to Ahu Akivi is an opportunity to take in the stunning and remote island that boasts rocky coastlines, dramatic seascapes, charming villages and stunning coral reefs. Because there is no industry on the island, the air is pristine and perfectly clear. As you approach Anakena Beach, admire the long white stretch of sand where legend says Hotu Matu'a made his famous landing.

Lunch:
In an authentic umu feast on Anakena Beach, savor the flavors of this Polynesian tradition. The umu, a stone oven heated with hot lava rocks, is the traditional way to cook in many of the countries within the Polynesian Triangle. Island's version involves workers starting the day before the meal, digging a hole, locating and placing the stones that will be heated to cook the food, and collecting the palm or other leaves that will be used to cover the food while it cooks. On the day of the meal, the same workers return to the hole, light a fire to heat the stones, place the meat and vegetables over the stones and cover it all with the leaves. Then, they fill in the hole with dirt and allow the ingredients to cook and steam underground for many hours. A folkloric show entertains while you dine.

Environmentally conscious guests will be happy to know that, upon your departure from the lunch site, the workers return to the venue and restore the landscape to exactly how it looked prior to the umu being dug, keeping the National Park landscape pristine and perfect. The tour operator has secured a special permit for this meal to be prepared for you within the National Park -- an unusual and highly-prized concession to the importance of your visit.

Special Notes:

A $80 National Park entrance fee is included in the cost of the tour.
