Port Chalmers
A deep-water port, Port Chalmers is nestled on the northern shore of Otago Harbor. It was founded in 1844 and grew in prosperity during the Otago gold rush. Early wooden buildings were replaced with more elegant brick and stone structures, many of which can be found still standing in this seaside town with a bohemian flair. A stroll through the old streets of Port Chalmers offers an eclectic mix of heritage attractions, art galleries, cafes and historic pubs, some of the oldest in New Zealand.
The Flying Whale Gallery
The Flying Whale Gallery opened in November 2017 as a showcase for famed local author David Elliot's amazing illustrations and books. David is an internationally recognized illustrator. In 2017, his fabulous Snark won two national awards: the Margaret Mahy Book of the Year and the Russell Clark Award for Illustration. His wife Gillian greets visitors and offers deep, personal insights into the author's inspirations, his illustrious career and life in Port Chalmers. The Flying Whale Gallery showcases and sells Elliot's imaginative illustrations as original art as well as mementos at all price points.
The Port Pantry
Selling a carefully curated selection of cookbooks, gifts and artisan treats, The Port Pantry is Port Chalmers premier destination for any foodie. It also serves as the headquarters of the Wild Fennel Co., purveyors of gourmet seasonings inspired by flavor pairings from around the globe. Samples of local delicacies are offered along with cheery conversation.
The Portsider
A beloved pub in the heart of Port Chalmers, The Portsider welcomes with authentic décor and an extensive collection of craft beers. The friendly atmosphere, well-appointed bar and homemade bread welcome locals and visitors alike looking for the latest local news and tasty grub.

Port Chalmers is a suburb and the main port of the city of Dunedin, New Zealand, with a population of 3,000 made up of many local artists and musicians.
