What you will visit:
Mount Cargill Guided Hike
The most prominent peaks in Dunedin, in Maori legend, the three peaks of Mount Cargill represent the head, body and feet of an Otakou tribe princess. The Mount Cargill hike is most suited to those who are physically fit. The climb ascends through a forest of secondary growth to be rewarded with views of Otago Harbour, Mihiwaka, Mount Kettle, Blueskin Bay and the Silver Peaks. Head into Mount Cargill's native bush, containing broadleaf, tree fuchsia, pepperwood, mountain cedar, emergent totara and many lush ferns as well as the Organ Pipes. Continue through manuka, kanuka and dracophyllum scrub, finally emerging at Butters Peak, 2,000 feet above sea level.

The Organ Pipes
These columns are a famous landmark, 10-million-year-old basalt formations created during the volcanic activity that formed Otago's harbor. Extensive walking over steep and uneven terrain is required.

What you will see along the way:
The dominant feature of the northern side of Dunedin, the top of Mount Cargill rises 2,217 feet (676m) above sea level. A walk to the top is rewarded with stellar views of urban Dunedin, the dramatic Otago coastline, and the surrounding countryside. The trek to the summit traverses native forest, dense moss and fern cover under a low canopy. The unusual Organ Pipes rock formation that you'll see occurred when hot lava hardened against cold rock causing it to form into columns that are close to a perfect hexagonal shape.

Photo Opportunity:
From Butters Peak take in the panoramic vistas and focus your lens on the stunning scenery at an elevation of more than 2,000 feet above sea level.

Snack:
A light refreshment is offered at the halfway point of your hike.
