WHAT YOU VISIT
Glendalough Monastery
Situated in a serene location between the Upper and Lower Lakes, the impressive complex is home to one of the most important monastic sites in Ireland. Founded by St. Kevin in the 6th century, the extensive ruins of Glendalough include several early churches, and an impressive 98-foot-tall round tower. Most of the buildings you see today date from the 10th to the 12th centuries. Despite attacks by Vikings over the years, Glendalough thrived as one of Ireland's great ecclesiastical foundations and schools of learning until the Normans destroyed the monastery in 1214.

Powerscourt Estate and Gardens
Built in the 1740s on a 12th century Anglo-Norman castle, the 47-acre estate was designed around an extravagant garden. Feel free to stroll through the Walled Gardens, the Italian Garden, the Dolphin Pond, and the Japanese Gardens.

Tour of the operational distillery where you will learn about the process of distilling whiskey in Ireland, including the impressive copper pot stills involved in the process. Your guided tour includes an introductory film, a guided tour of the distillery and a food paring with tastings of the distillery made Fercullen Whiskey. Locally sourced produce will melt in the mouth as your host explains how the tasting notes and flavours of various food pairings complement each other. Continue on foot to visit Powerscourt Gardens. The estate was originally an important strategic site for the Anglo-Normans who came to Ireland in the 12th century. By the year 1300, a castle was built and in the possession of the le Por (Power) family from which it takes its name. Today, the estate is owned by the Slazenger family.

PHOTO OPPORTUNITY
Have your camera at the ready during your day of discovery. Among the ruins of Glendalough you'll find the six-foot-tall Market Cross. Dating to the 12th century, the cross bears a sculptured head of a crucified Christ in high relief and a carving of a bishop, probably representing St. Kevin. Another photo op awaits at Pepperpot Tower, one of the most whimsical and unusual features that you will find in Powerscourt Gardens. A climb to the top offers views of the gardens and wooded areas around the estate.

LUNCH
A food paring with tastings of the distillery made Fercullen Whiskey. Enjoy some locally sourced produce as your host explains how the tasting notes and flavours of various food pairings complement each other.

WHAT YOU SEE ALONG THE WAY
