Description

Be sure to read the Special Notes further down this page for important requirements and restriction.

Your tour begins as you board your motorcoach for a scenic drive to Dublin Castle.

Upon arriving at the Dublin Castle complex, you will marvel at this imposing structure. A symbol of British rule over Ireland for seven centuries, the castle began as a 13th-century Anglo-Norman fortress. Your guided tour takes you through State Apartments adorned with Killybeg carpets and Waterford chandeliers. Once home to the Viceroy, the apartments are now used for important state functions.

As you tour through the City you will travel alongside the River Liffey, passing Dublin's original prehistoric settlement and the site of the 12th-century medieval city.

Your tour continues to Trinity College, the alma mater of distinguished alumni, including Jonathan Swift of Gulliver's Travels fame, Oscar Wilde and Nobel Prize winner Samuel Beckett. You will make your way to the Trinity College Library Long Room that houses 200,000-antiquarian texts, and in an adjacent room, the Book of Kells.

The lavishly illustrated medieval manuscript contains the four Gospels. The book probably dates to the early 9th century and may have been the work of monks from Iona. The scribes embellished their calligraphy with intricate Celtic designs, human figures and animals. You will view an exhibit on the production of the Book, as well as other exhibits on Ireland.

Your tour concludes with a relaxing drive to the pier. You may opt to stay in Dublin for independent sightseeing (morning departures only); however, you are responsible for your return transportation to the pier.
