WHAT YOU VISIT
Outrigger Canoe Ride
Take a step back in time to the days of great Pacific Ocean voyages and glide across the crystal-clear waters on a traditionally-build outrigger canoe. Known to the locals as a 'sailau', this hand-hewn canoe is unchanged in design and has been used for millennia to transport people, animals and goods between the islands. Throughout history, they were widely-used in ceremonies and rituals and meticulously crafted from special woods such as malauwi, all under strict customs to derive the best results and appease the gods. With strong sea breezes, a sailau can attain speeds up to 15 to18 knots and sail between 10 and 30 miles. Used throughout Milne Bay Province until 2000, this quiet way of life is being replace by the speed and convenience of motor-powered dinghies.
As you sail off the beaten track, take a moment to photograph your awesome surroundings of sparkling lagoons, water that changes hue with every sea breeze, and beaches of legendary beauty.
WHAT YOU SEE ALONG THE WAY
Escape the crowds and experience a world normally seen by the locals: the tropical trinity of sand, sun and water.
